Midwives are registered
nurses who have graduated from advanced educational programs accredited
by the American College of Nurse Midwives. CNMs are certified nurse
midwives licensed in all states and maintain prescription privileges.
CNMs focus on wellness in providing preventive care, pap smears, breast
exams, family planning, and total prenatal, labor and delivery,
postpartum, and newborn care. Nurse
Practitioners are registered nurses that have an advanced education
(Master of Science in Nursing) and clinical training in a health care
specialty area. NP's are required to attend an educational facility
accredited by the National Organization of Nurse Practitioners Faculties
and the American Association of the Colleges of Nursing. Women's Health
Care NPs provide care throughout the lifespan of the female patient from
adolescence through menopause. Nurse Practitioners diagnose and treat
acute health problems, provide prenatal care and family planning
services, perform physical exams, prescribe medications, and order,
perform and interpret diagnostic studies such as lab work and
ultrasounds.
